Frequently Asked Questions

What is this for?

Rescreening a flyscreen you already own. It is the mesh on its own, cut to a manageable square, for when the mesh has torn or perished and the frame is still good.

Which mesh do I need?

Match what is in the frame now, or upgrade while it is apart. Standard 18 x 16 grey is the everyday mesh, midge 20 x 20 black stops no-see-ums and sand flies, and 10 x 16 pet mesh survives claws.

What are the standard mesh specifications?

18 x 16 threads per square inch, grey, woven from permanent glass yarn with a protective vinyl coating. Thread diameter 0.011 inches or 0.279 millimetres, 66% open area.

What are the midge mesh specifications?

20 x 20 threads per square inch, black. Thread diameter 0.013 inches or 0.33 millimetres, 45% open area. It is also sold as no-see-um screen.

What are the pet mesh specifications?

10 x 16 threads per square inch in heavy duty vinyl coated polyester yarn, black. It is considerably stronger than fibreglass.

What sizes do the cut pieces come in?

1000mm x 1000mm, 1500mm x 1500mm and 2000mm x 2000mm.

Which size should I order?

The one that covers your frame with a little spare all round. Measure the frame including the spline channel, not just the visible mesh.

How do I rescreen a frame?

Pull the old spline out, lay the new mesh over the frame with a little spare, roll the spline back into the channel with a spline roller, then trim the excess with a blade.

How tight should the mesh be?

Under light, even tension. Too loose and it ripples; too tight and it bows the frame. Work opposite sides alternately rather than going round in one direction.

Does it fray when I cut it?

No. The vinyl coating on the fibreglass holds the weave together at the cut, so it does not unravel.

Will it fit a frame that is not ours?

Yes. Mesh is mesh. It works in any standard spline framed window or door screen.

Can I use it on a door screen?

Yes, on a framed door screen. Check the frame size against the cut sizes first, because a tall door frame may need the roll instead.

Should I buy the cut piece or the roll?

The cut piece for one or two windows. The roll for a whole house, a patio enclosure, or if you want stock on hand. The roll is the cheaper way to buy the same mesh in quantity.

Is the mesh flammable?

The fibreglass meshes are non combustible and will not rust, corrode or stain.

Will it stand up to sun?

The vinyl coating is what protects the colour and the flexibility, and it is made for exterior use. Pet mesh, being polyester, is the toughest of the three.

Which mesh is most see through?

Standard grey. Midge is darker because the weave is tighter, and pet mesh is the heaviest thread of the three.

Which mesh gives the most airflow?

Standard, at 66% open area. Midge is 45%. Pet mesh sits between the two in practice, because the thread is heavier but the weave is more open.

Will midge mesh stop mosquitoes too?

Yes. Anything that stops a no-see-um stops a mosquito comfortably.

Do I need any special tools?

A spline roller helps and costs very little. Otherwise scissors or a blade and a steady hand.

Can I reuse the old spline?

Usually, if it is still soft. If it has gone hard or cracked, replace it: hard spline is what makes mesh pop out a season later.

Does the mesh come with spline?

No. This is the mesh only.

Can I get a colour other than grey or black?

No. Standard is grey, midge and pet are black.

How much spare should I allow?

About 5 centimetres beyond the frame on each side. It gives you something to hold while you roll the spline in.

Will it work on a security screen?

No. A security screen uses a steel or aluminium mesh and is a different product. This is insect screening.

What does delivery cost?

Delivery is free anywhere in Australia on orders of $100 or more. Below that it is a flat $27.50, which is also the express rate, so one price covers the order however many items are in it.

How long does delivery take?

Allow 5 to 7 days to your door, after a 24 to 48 hour handling and processing time on our end.

Do you deliver outside Australia?

No. We deliver within Australia only.

Do your prices include GST?

Yes. Every price on the site is the GST inclusive price, and the free delivery threshold is measured on the GST inclusive total too.

Can I return it if I change my mind?

Yes. You have 30 days to return an unused item in its original packaging for a refund. Nothing here affects your rights under the Australian Consumer Law if the mesh is faulty, not fit for purpose or not as described.

How do I track my order?

Use the tracking code from your confirmation email on our Track Your Parcel page.

Buying Guide

Which mesh to order

Match what you are replacing, or upgrade while the frame is apart. Standard grey is the everyday mesh. Midge is a tighter black weave for no-see-ums and sand flies, which is what you want near water. Pet mesh is the heavy vinyl coated polyester that survives claws.

Rescreening a frame

Take the old spline out, lay the new mesh over the frame with a little spare all round, roll the spline back into the channel and trim the excess with a blade. Keep the mesh under a light, even tension so it does not ripple.

Cut piece or roll

This is the cut piece, sized for one or two windows. If you are doing a whole house or a patio enclosure, the fiberglass screen roll is the cheaper way to buy the same mesh.
